When it comes to taking medications during pregnancy, less is more."

That's Dr. Carmen Farrior, an ob-gyn at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, recently featured in @thebump

Her point: multi-symptom cold and flu products often treat things you don't even have, which means more medication than you need.

Choosing to donate a kidney to someone while you're still living is one of the most generous decisions a person can make. It also means going through major surgery when you aren't sick yourself.

That's why our transplant surgeons keep asking how to make donation easier on the donor.

In a recent study, Dr. Srinivasan Muthukrishnan and colleagues at University of Maryland Medical Center looked at six living donors whose kidneys were removed using a surgical robot through a single small incision near the belly button, rather than several incisions.

The results were encouraging. None of the donors had major complications, all went home within two days, and every donated kidney began working right away in its recipient.

It's an early look at a small group, and the team is calling for larger studies before this becomes routine. But for future donors, it points toward a recovery with less physical impact and a smaller scar.

"Living kidney donors make an extraordinary altruistic decision to help other individuals in need," Dr. Muthukrishnan said. "Transplant surgeons strive to continually improve the donor experience."
