Could the existing Commonwealth ever evolve into the federation it long ago gave up trying to become? This has become so implausible that Canada has opted to cosy up to the EU instead. As for us, if we want closer union with polities that hate everything about Britain except the money we send, we might as well do the same.

So perhaps before Our Andeh says something we all regret, on our affiliation with either of these august societies, we should start the campaign to decolonise the Commonwealth by removing Britain from its ranks. If it really is a club of equals, it’ll be fine without us. As for Charles, we can club together and get him a package holiday for next year.

Since last spring inflation has been on a steady upwards march — a trend we cannot attribute merely to the energy shock caused by the Iran war. In Britain, the European Union, America, Canada and Japan alike, the core inflation rate — which strips out energy and food prices to try and capture underlying pressures — has been stubbornly above target. At some point, you have to ask: when does this stop being temporary?

It appears there is something more than just an energy shock driving up inflation. For a while now, some economists who study the economic impact of climate change have been predicting that the inflation rate will move permanently higher. We may now be in the foothills of what could turn out to be higher peaks.

‘Do you ever get paranoid that you’re not being paranoid enough?’ asks John Malkovich in Martin McDonagh’s new black comedy, 'Wild Horse Nine'. It is 1973 and Malkovich’s character Chris, an ageing, morphine-addicted CIA agent, is fresh from plotting a coup in Chile along with his colleague Lee (Sam Rockwell). The pair have decamped to Easter Island where Chris, high on opiates, starts blabbing the agency’s secrets to whoever will listen: his part in the Kennedy assassination, and his more recent work plotting to topple President Allende. ‘Enjoy him while you can, ladies,’ he tells two Chilean students he comes across at the airport. ‘Your country is gonna get fucked.’

Some early viewers have been offended by the movie’s ‘cool, jokey complacency’. The jokes come mostly ‘at the expense of the myriad political victims of America’s relentless interventionist politics’.
