we’re entering an era where every product insight will get copied the moment it’s public, by agents that are working 24/7.

what i think that means for the next months (wip):

1. spend literally all your time talking to customers

2. do whatever you need to do to perfect your moat: human decision making

go on walks, jam with friends, take long showers, and spend time with out of distribution (old?) ideas, take care of yourself.

your ideas and judgment as to how the pieces connect still make the difference.

3. maximize compute so you can ship faster

in 2023 the sentiment was that ai would only ever create an initial design exploration for you.

it's now clear that it'll go beyond that.

there are at least three ways in which design can change radically:

1. the output remains familiar but, like software factories, people will be OK with giving llms more autonomy. e.g. shipping ai designs straight to prod without looking

2. generative ui becomes a thing and most services become headless. the job becomes “influencing what ui the llm shows”

3. generative ui becomes a thing but uis become 100% pixel streams (video)

it's crucial that as designers we make sure these changes are good.

the work we ship should always benefit humanity. selfishly, the act of designing should also remain fun.

one implication is that we're going to need much better tools!

we'll only be able to co-design with design intelligence if we have tools that can keep up.

we need design tools purpose-built for exploring and reasoning about latent space.
