Cochran was already fading, and resigned halfway into his term. Rs appointed Hyde-Smith to replace her - a historic first female senator for Mississippi, but also a fundamentally lazy politician who never really had to campaign.
Dems made her sweat in the 2018 special, then in 2020. If they beat her, an all-time story of elite meddling in primaries eventually backfiring.
